California retailers will still be able to offer their customers paper shopping bags. However, grocers will charge shoppers ten cents or more for every paper bag used. The California law does not apply to shopping bags used at other retailers.

Poly bags for fruits, vegetables or meats are still permitted under the new law. Therefore, the demand for plastic bags that are FDA approved for food contact will not change. These bags include ice bags and zip lock bags that are used to seal up food while in transit or for storage.
